How we raise money and awarness
  Minimize
Besides membership contributions, GSAA holds events throughout the year that help us raise money. Most of our events are annual and take place around the same time each year. On this page you will learn about these events and other ways we help the School and its students. You will learn how and when you can join or help us with each event. GSAA takes pride in providing a great fun filled experience in hopes that you will continue to help us in our cause. Aside from learning what each event has to offer, you will be able to go into the past and read how each event went. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of our Board with your questions and/or concerns. Please take the time to read about each event because you may just find something of interest to you.

  Annual Raffle
  Minimize
You are invited to participate in our Annual Raffle, our largest fundraiser of the year. Last year we raised over $7,000 for the Association to continue making a lasting difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters at Glenwood School. Since the start of this fundraising event we have raised approximately $35,000, and we couldn't be more grateful and thankful for all those who have participated. Thanks to your continued support every year, we have been able to make this fundraising event a huge success and reach more and more individuals every year.
The mission of the Alumni Association is to conduct programs and activities to advance the pleasures of life, comfort and welfare of the current students of Glenwood School.
The moneys that we raise from the raffle gives us the opportunity to continue to fund many projects that we participate in, such as, the Annual Senior Essay Contest, supplies for Camp Getschow; such as funds to support the Wildlife Education Fund, t-shirts for our pre-camp weekend, where we add finishing touches to the camp property before the kids arrive. We also provide the Camp banquet awards, trophies and competitive t-shirts for the Canoe, Archery and Sailboat races, and any other special projects to enhance the experience "of a lifetime" at Glenwood School's Camp Getschow in Loretta, WI.
Our goal this year is to insure that Camp Getschow is an opportunity for the students to experience, for decades to come. Glenwood's Camp Getschow is located on 180 acres in Northern Wisconsin. It's a truly unique opportunity for more than 100 children to build self-esteem and self-confidence while developing a variety of new skills, including swimming, fishing, archery, water sports, arts and crafts, woodworking, and learning about nature first hand.
You can help the students of Glenwood School by purchasing or selling the tickets that we have enclosed with this letter. We are asking you to make a true effort to sell all your tickets and return the stubs promptly, filled out completely. We will accept the first 1,500 tickets that are returned, so make sure you're the first to mail yours back.
Anything that you can do will be greatly appreciated. Remember that 100% of all of our fundraising efforts go directly to benefit the students of this great school. With these difficult economic times Glenwood has still made a commitment to keeping Camp Getschow open, and we look forward to partnering with the school in enhancing the summer experience for the kids.
It goes without saying that your contributions are necessary to help us meet our goals, and continue to make a lasting difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters. We would like to thank you with our deepest gratitude for your continued support of the Glenwood School Alumni Association.

  Glenwood School's Flag Day
  Minimize

Less than a decade ago Glenwood School held its commencement exercise either on Flag Day or the Sunday nearest that date. Presently this event occurs on the Saturday just after end of the school year often near the end of May. On this day the students and staff show the parents, friends, Alumni and donors much of the students' achievements. All who attend are shown skill sets and leadership abilities of the students at Glenwood. Awards for being outstanding cadets or leaders are given to students that have worked hard and stood out amongst their peers. Glenwood also takes the time to thank its supporters and parents for another great school year.

Flag Day also holds a great opportunity for GSAA to hold its most highly attended meeting of the year. Glenwood allows us to hold a fund raising cookout for the guest and members of both the school and alumni. While we are firing up traditional grilled food and providing beverages we take the time to talk to parents and students about our group. After Glenwood has celebrated the year and we have fed the masses, we organize on campus for our meeting and discuss future plans with our members.

Flag Day is usually around the end of May through the beginning of June. The date will be posted on our site as well as Glenwood School's site

  Glenwood's Camp Getschow
  Minimize

In 1948 Director Frederick G. Behrends presented the need for a summer camp to Delmar Koehler, the furniture Manufacturer. Mr. and Mrs. Koehler gave Glenwood School their heavily wooded 180-acre summer retreat located on Blaisdell Lake in Loretta, Wisconsin, near the Chequamegon National Forest. Fred Behrends visited camp staying at Faraway Cabin every year until his passing at camp in 1958. He enjoyed watching the campers having their summer fun at this beautiful location. Camp is an ideal place to enjoy archery, swimming, sailing, canoeing, fishing, boating, indoor and outdoor sports, Native American folklore, hiking, and evening activities that promoted teamwork and sportsmanship.

In the early days between 1949 and 1957 the Camp director was the School's principal George Millish. In 1958 the camp director was our shop teacher Bill Kalbac. (After leaving Glenwood in 1961, Bill continued to teach at summer camps in Colorado to this day.) The camp workers were the freshman and sophomores; the camp counselors were the high school juniors, seniors and alumni college students returning to work at camp. In those days the candidates for those jobs were many, In 1958 there were about 60 freshman and sophomores. However, with the 1958 arrival of Charles Ackerman, only four seniors survived to graduate in 1961. Even though this policy continued until 1991, Military instructor Ray Borgia directed camp until 1976 still using high school students. If you were a student from 1949 to 1958, you will want to take a look at the camp pictures for those years in our gallery. Is it any wonder that camp has such a high priority amoung our alumni?

Without a good number of high school students in later years, the school had to pay a high price to bring in workers and counselors from around the world. In 1999 camp director Mark Holstein began allowing the alumni to come to camp before the campers arrived to clean up the grounds and prepare the cabins and what ever was needed to be done to keep camp in tip-top shape. In 2004 Mary Behrends Gallagher, the daughter of Fred Behrends, came to camp with the alumni and visited the camp one last time. She was given the privalage of staying at her dad's olld cabin, Faraway. Her presence caused a few extra alumni to come up to work at camp that year.

Camp facilities include 10 cabins, a dining hall, gymnasium, lodge, health center, plus staff, guest, laundry, and storage and maintenance buildings. Campers pay only their regular monthly tuition. Camp Getschow staff includes the Camp Director, Program staff, Water Safety and Nursing staff as well as an international counseling staff, from the Camp America program, which helps Glenwood campers learn first hand about diversity and interact with people from many different cultures.

Camp has particular fond memories for most of our alumni. Each year they come up for a weekend get together to prepare the camp for the arrival of the campers from both Glenwood School campuses. Alumnus Bob McClain and his wife Rose now stay year around to care for the grounds.

Each student is expected to attend Camp Getschow for at least one Camp period while they are enrolled at Glenwood School.

Alumni Pre-Camp Weekend

Welcome

We will gather at Glenwood’s Camp Getschow for our annual Pre-Camp Weekend on June 15, 16 & 17th 2012 this year.

It is important to note three things:

1. This is a working weekend.
2. We are here to support the program not run it.
3. You will need to make reservations (required) so we can ensure we have ample food and accommodations for everyone.

With that said there will be ample free time, suggestions are welcome on how the Alumni Association can improve our support of the program.

Please contact:
John Rosenberry jrosenberry@roe55.k12.il.us
